ACRISS is committed to promoting inclusive and accessible car rental for all travellers. Many major car rental providers now offer services and vehicle adaptations designed to support customers with disabilities or reduced mobility, helping make road travel safer, more comfortable, and more independent.

Car rental companies increasingly recognise accessibility needs and provide practical solutions such as hand controls, steering aids, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles (see below equipment codes approved by ACRISS).  These adaptations are often available at no additional cost but usually need to be requested in advance and/or booked directly with the car rental company.  Some car rental companies also work with specialist partners to supply permanently adapted vehicles where required.

Check what services are offered by your car rental company — some companies provide additional features, such as steering aids, custom mobility adaptations and equipment. Check what accessibility services are available at the car rental location for drivers and passengers such as ramps, in some cases advance notification is needed to support the individual’s needs.

Accessible car rental supports equal access to travel and independence on the road. By encouraging early communication and awareness of available services, we can help ensure a smoother and more inclusive rental experience for everyone whilst enabling the customer to make an informed choice and book with confidence.

Accessible service goes beyond vehicles and car rental location. Many rental companies are improving website accessibility, booking support, and customer service processes to ensure customers can easily request assistance and understand their options before travelling in line with the new EU Accessibility Act 2025 (EAA).

To make your car rental experience as smooth as possible:

  • Book adaptations in advance (e.g. hand controls, wheelchair-accessible vehicles) using the special equipment codes available or following the car rental company’s instructions.
  • Make sure any mobility or accessibility needs and special requirements are communicated clearly when reserving your rental car.
  • Confirm availability and costs for adapted vehicles and equipment with the car rental company.  Check driver eligibility requirements for adapted controls.
  • Check for local parking accessibility regulations and requirements such as Blue Badge Scheme abroad.
  • Check for any specialist insurance requirements

ACRISS provides support for disabled drivers and accessibility needs through its approved equipment and optional extras codes:

  • HCL:  Hand Controls left
  • HCR:  Hand Controls right
  • SPN: Spinner/Steering wheel knob
